Why Solar in New York?

The most common argument against solar energy is "but you need sun for solar to work, and it's always cloudy ". Solar Energy systems don't need direct sunlight to operate. In fact, solar thermal systems can and will produce heat & hot water in winter and during periods of inclement weather.

If you look at the insolation (solar radiation) maps, New York actually has a lot of solar energy potential. PV panels also work well, and are very efficient with the new micro-inverter technology. This allows them to produce AC current right from the back of the panel. These panels allow a system to continue to produce electricity even if some of the panels are shaded.

Solar Thermal at a Glance:

A Solar Thermal System consists of three main parts: Solar Panels, Storage Tanks, & Controls. Other plumbing and heating system parts may apply depending upon the current
configuration of a heating system. These systems can be used for many applications including residential and commercial Hot Water.

These systems are designed to provide hot water, heating, and air conditioning for large commercial systems. The best return on investment occurs with existing systems using Electric, Fuel Oil, or Propane.

How Much Can You Save?

It depends on:
• how much domestic hot water you use
• the size of the ST System
• how sunny the local area is
• the orientation of the ST panels
• how much you pay to heat your domestic hot water

Solar Thermal Systems can save 50-80% on your energy bills, and can pay for themselves in as little as 4 Years. The upfront cost of solar thermal is much less than PV, and with the vast amount of financial incentives it can give you a very strong return on investment.

NYSERDA Incentives:

NYSERDA provides incentives for the installation of new Solar Thermal systems for the production of hot water displacing electrically-heated hot water. System incentives are capped at $4,000 for residential systems and $25,000 for nonresidential applicants

A 30% Federal and 25% NYS Tax Credit are also available.

We were happy to help our client in reducing his propane bill by installing a Solar Water Heater. "What I noticed is my boiler didn't turn on for 5 days despite using the dishwasher and taking multiple showers. The only thing I don't like is that I didn't have this system installed sooner". --Dale P. (Solar Thermal Customer 2013)

Solar Electric at a Glance:

Photovoltaic or PV systems convert sunlight directly into electricity that can serve a portion of your
electrical needs. PV systems are connected to your electrical service panel and are used to supplement
your existing utility service. When the PV system is generating more electricity than you use, it is as if the meter spins backwards, and you will receive a credit for the excess power from your utility.

This process is known as net metering. With proper location, a PV system works anytime the sun is shining. It works best when facing south and must not be shaded by trees, nearby buildings, or other obstructions. PV systems are gentle on the environment. In contrast with electricity generated by fossil fuels, PV creates no noise, air or water pollution.

These systems provide long term stabilization of electrical cost, and when combined with a battery backup system, a PV unit can provide you with power when utility power is out.

How Much Can You Save?

It depends on:
• how much electricity you use
• the size of the PV system
• how sunny the local area is
• the orientation of the PV panels
• how much you pay your utility for electricity

NYSERDA Incentives:

NYSERDA provides incentives for up to 7kW or less for residential, 25kW or less for not-for-profit and 50kW or less for commercial sites
